Made in Tobe, Japan

The Oldest studio in Tobe, Baizan Studio invented its “Tobe Karakusa” pattern during the 1950s.  Simple and clean white body embraces the powerful Karakusa deco inside, which may remind you Japanese calligraphy.  It can be used as everyday pasta bowl or small fruit bowl.

Baizan Studio uses locally mined porcelain stone which makes the bowl slightly thick yet refined to a high quality.

Retailer Information

Versatile and practical, Tobe porcelain is blessed with indigo blue GOSU patterns (cobalt ore containing traces of manganese) over the melting warmth of its milky white surface. The small yet vibrant town of Tobe, which is almost unknown to the UK is located on the island of Shikoku (South West Japan).  By using a locally mined porcelain stone, Tobe porcelain’s thick-body makes it unusually strong for porcelain.  The production of Tobe porcelain started more than 230 years ago deriving from the local Sueki earthenware makers of over 1500 years ago.

tabi Arts was founded in 2009 by Mamiko Karasudani who first introduced Tobe Porcelain to the UK during a special exhibition. Today there are more than 90 studios with over 450 potters practicing.  Each piece is formed and painted entirely by hand, for Spirit Boutique we have chosen items from two studios; Baizan Studio and Senzan Studio, which are all carefully hand-selected directly from artists in Tobe. Their unique emblems are found on the bottom of every piece.
